The Australian Taxation Office has introduced a new feature in its app to help you check if a call is really from them.
Scam calls pretending to be the ATO are becoming more common — but now you can verify calls in real time.
The ATO has added a “Verify Call” feature in their official app to help protect you.
📱 How it works
Download and open the ATO app on Google Play or App Store for iphone
When you get a call claiming to be the ATO, tap “Verify Call”
Wait for a notification (usually within 30 seconds)
✔️ If you get a confirmation → the call is real ❌ If you don’t → hang up, it’s likely a scam
This lets you confirm calls in real time while you're still on the phone.
📞 Check your contact details
To make sure this feature works properly, your details must be up to date.
Log in to your ATO online services or app, or call your tax agent to assist
Check your registered mobile number and landline
Update it if it’s incorrect or outdated
This ensures you receive verification alerts quickly and securely.
⚠️ Important reminders
The ATO will never pressure you to make immediate payments
Never share your TFN, passwords, or bank details over the phone
If something feels off — hang up and verify through the app
